Traffic Calming Policy and Performance in the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany
Taking evidence from three countries, this article provides an overview of the various techniques used, the objectives they serve, and the outcomes in terms of safety and livability. By 1990, the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany had already gained a lot of experience with calming traffic, compared to the UK where awareness of the potential had barely begun.
Diagrams are used to convey the main principles of traffic calming. Ten photos illustrate good practice, including a pioneering scheme in Wandsworth, London.
This article pre-dated the comprehensive guide to traffic calming published by Devon County Council later in 1991 - Traffic Calming Guidelines (see link).
