Three trips a day - is it a constant?
For many years, UK data supported the idea that an average of three trips per day per person was a constant, along with an average of around one hour travel per day per person. In the 21st century, however, the number of trips in Britain has been falling, from 3 a day in 1995 to 2.5 a day 20 years later.
In addition, examples can be found in other places of trip rates very much lower than three a day. For example, Turin has a reported trip rate (all modes) of only 2.1 per day, although walks of less than 5 minutes are excluded). What is going on? Does it reflect behaviour change, and if so, what explains this change? Or does it have something to do with the way trip data are recorded, especially when comparing with other countries.
