Fitness or purpose?

Cycling, like walking, is a fully sustainable mode of travel, and helps people to stay fit and healthy. But cyclists are roughly divided into those who pursue the fitness or "sporting" aspect, and those for whom it is more simply a means of getting from A to B.

The groups are distinguished by their choice of machine, their choice of clothing, but also the speed at which they cycle.

There are big differences between cities as to the proportion of each type of cyclist. As a generality, continental cities have a higher proportion of "purpose" cyclists, whereas Britain has a higher proportion of "fitness" cyclists.

This has an important bearing on the issue of how well cyclists mix with pedestrians.
