The project was undertaken with a large team, coordinated by George Wright on behalf of Barratt Homes.
The scheme design (Richard Partington Architects) was shortlisted for the 2012 Urban Design Awards.
The design incorporates "preferential routing" for pedestrians and cyclists to the town centre. The routes to the town centre by car will be longer, thus encouraging people to walk or cycle to reach the town centre, and the main town bus stops.
A new road, which is wanted by local people to provide a by-pass on the northern side of the town, made the development not only accepted but even desired. The road has not been evaluated in terms of traffic impacts or costs and benefits, but this has not been a concern because it is entirely developer-funded!
