European study tour of traffic calming
Dublin Corporation were planning to implement traffic calming measures and was keen to find out more about best practice in continental Europe. Through their consultants, Ove Arup and Partners, Tim Pharoah led the study tour to cities in the Netherlands and West Germany. Places visited were:
Amsterdam, 30kmph zone, main road calming schemes;
Ruhr area, main road calming project in Herne and Eikel, and dual-mode guided-bus scheme in Essen;
Cologne, various calming and pedestrian schemes;
Eindhoven (Netherlands), area-wide traffic calming demonstration project.
