Planning Growth to Promote Sustainable Access

Development needs to be structured into corridors and nodes in order to be served efficiently by public transport. The study was therefore initially titled "Planning for Development in Public Transport Corridors" study. The work was undertaken during 1999-2000. Despite urging from the team, and also from the Government's Environment and Transport Select Committee, the research was never published.

The research was intended to be the basis for a companion guide to "Planning Policy Guidance (PPG)13". This, along with various other PPGs, was withdrawn by the Tory Government in March 2012.

The key aspects of the work, including case studies, will be made available on livingtransport.com.

The Manchester - Oldham corridor case study report (2000) is already available here for download (see right). This highlights the planning and economic obstacles to implementing transit oriented development where demand for development is low. It also highlights a lack of integration between development planning and transport planning.
