Streets with people, or roads with cars?

This paper argues for the layout and design of streets, including the arrangement of land uses and densities, that are geared to the needs of people on foot. It further argues that designing instead around the needs of cars creates environments where walking and sojourning become difficult, unpleasant, unsafe or even impossible.

This paper follows on from the author's involvement in "Manual for Streets", published in the same year.
