Ross on Wye "rTown" project
The Ross on Wye rTown project is part of the "Re-Imagining the High Street" competition (funded by InnovateUK, formerly the Technology Strategy Board). Tim Pharoah was brought into the team to develop transport and access proposals as part of the overall strategy to revive the fortunes of the town centre.
Proposals include the introduction of a "Parking Route" system of signing, to encourage drivers to take more direct and less disruptive routes to car parks serving the town centre. This routing system could result in a significant reduction of traffic in the main shopping streets, thus enabling a step change improvement in the public realm, with more space available for walking and sojourning.
The aim is to break the vicious circle whereby a poor environment leads to uncompetitiveness, which means low footfall and poor trade, which translates into lack of investor interest, thus perpetuating the poor offer and cycle of decline.
