Sustainable Development Plan for Astana
A multi-disciplinary team worked for a short but intensive period in Astana to produce an outline sustainable development plan for the city.
The transport issues were undermined by pre-existing proposals for major new high capacity roads, in particular an outer orbital motorway. The team could find no evidence to support the case for this road, nor could they see any purpose for it that would justify the enormous cost. The team subsequently declined to return to Astana to carry out further work on the sustainability plan unless the outer motorway plan was scrapped.
