Out-of-centre sites rule out good bus access
Out-of-centre sites rule out good bus access
Roger Sexton says that deregulated buses prevent the planning of comprehensive bus services to business parks and other out-of-centre developments (LTT 1st July), and I agree that bus deregulation is a barrier to integration. But the real point is that business parks, peripherally located and consisting of large monolithic "units" and parking lots strung out along winding loop roads, cannot be served efficiently by public transport. The format is deliberately geared to car access and virtually precludes the convenience of other modes.
As for parking provision, this can and should be reduced if the right developments are planned in the right place. The answer is not to allow more parking until bus deregulation is ended, but to stop developments whose location and format prevents a high proportion of access by bus, foot and cycle. So I repeat my point (Viewpoint June 17th) planners need to get a grip.
