Woodbrook is Phase One of the new "Brokerstown Village" development to the west of Lisburn, Northern Ireland. The developer is Carvill Group, based in Belfast.
Tim Pharoah was a member of the large collaborative team responsible for planning the 84 hectare site, and also co-author of Manual for Streets. Judges comment:
"At present, Manual for streets is not widely used in Northern Ireland. As such, this scheme is a clear departure from the norm and demonstrates the designers' readiness to innovate to meet the housing needs of today. It is an excellent example of collaboration between a number of key parties, some of whom may have been reluctant to adopt this approach initially. It covers a wide spectrum of route types, from the spine road to local access routes. Movement and place functions are well balanced, with good connections to the surrounding area providing a high degree of permeability. The judges were particularly impressed with the attention given to community cohesion." (IHT Journal, July 2009)
