Green Areas study
In the 1990s, buses in many parts of London were severely affected by the impact of traffic congestion, including slow journey times and unreliability. Bus "bunching" had become a common experience. Something needed to be done.
Following a 1991 "Green Routes" study that contributed to the development of a London wide programme of bus priority, the "Green Area" study for three London Boroughs (Hounslow Ealing and Hammersmith & Fulham) and London Transport covered an area of inner west London including four shopping centres and major traffic and bus routes, BR rail and LT Underground lines. It included proposals to re-balance road space across all modes building on the bus priority initiatives already accepted for grant by the Department of Transport. It addressed the issue of how to integrate bus priority measures in town centres with pedestrian priority. The project involved surveys of car parking, leisure use (swimming pools), group discussion work with town centre users, and seminars for the three boroughs and London Transport. A final report was submitted in October 1996.
