Creating Convivial Urban Spaces - 2010
The presentation uses examples to show that lively and convivial places depend on the social and economic context of the location. Convivial places can occur even if the architecture and landscaping is mediocre or poor. Conversely there are plenty of carefully designed places that are devoid of people and activity. Ways in which convivial spaces can be created are suggested. The essence is to give first consideration to people on foot. This will often involve taking a stance against developers and property investors whose prime consideration is to cater for car users.
