Kent Downs AONB: Rural Streets and Lanes: a Design Handbook
Rural roads should be part of the landscape through which they pass. Too often, their design is characterised by signs, lines, markings, kerbs and other features that signal an urban rather than a rural environment.
The handbook illustrates this issue in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and provides guidance on how the rural streets and lanes can be designed in ways that enhance rather than detract from the rural character. The handbook is dedicated to Hans Monderman, whose pioneering design philosophy inspired the approach.
